procxy / ChildCrashedError

Class: ChildCrashedError

Defined in: src/shared/errors.ts:191

Thrown when the child process exits or is killed while the proxy is active.

Remarks

When a child crash is detected, all in-flight method calls are immediately rejected with this error. The proxy object becomes inert — subsequent calls also reject until you create a new proxy with procxy() again.

Common causes:

  • An uncaught exception or unhandled rejection inside the child class
  • OOM kill from the OS
  • An external SIGKILL / SIGTERM signal
  • Calling $terminate() from the parent

After catching this error, inspect exitCode and signal to determine whether the crash was expected (e.g., signal === 'SIGTERM' after you called $terminate()) or unexpected.

Example

typescript
import { procxy, ChildCrashedError } from 'procxy';
import { MyWorker } from './worker.js';

const worker = await procxy(MyWorker);
try {
  await worker.doWork();
} catch (err) {
  if (err instanceof ChildCrashedError) {
    console.error(
      `Child exited: code=${err.exitCode}, signal=${err.signal}`
    );
    // Spawn a fresh proxy if you need to recover
  }
}

stackTraceLimitstaticnumberThe Error.stackTraceLimit property specifies the number of stack frames collected by a stack trace (whether generated by new Error().stack or Error.captureStackTrace(obj)). The default value is 10 but may be set to any valid JavaScript number. Changes will affect any stack trace captured after the value has been changed. If set to a non-number value, or set to a negative number, stack traces will not capture any frames.ProcxyError.stackTraceLimitnode_modules/.pnpm/@types+node@25.6.0/node_modules/@types/node/globals.d.ts:67

Methods

captureStackTrace()

ts
static captureStackTrace(targetObject, constructorOpt?): void;

Defined in: node_modules/.pnpm/@types+node@25.6.0/node_modules/@types/node/globals.d.ts:51

Creates a .stack property on targetObject, which when accessed returns a string representing the location in the code at which Error.captureStackTrace() was called.

js
const myObject = {};
Error.captureStackTrace(myObject);
myObject.stack;  // Similar to `new Error().stack`

The first line of the trace will be prefixed with ${myObject.name}: ${myObject.message}.

The optional constructorOpt argument accepts a function. If given, all frames above constructorOpt, including constructorOpt, will be omitted from the generated stack trace.

The constructorOpt argument is useful for hiding implementation details of error generation from the user. For instance:

js
function a() {
  b();
}

function b() {
  c();
}

function c() {
  // Create an error without stack trace to avoid calculating the stack trace twice.
  const { stackTraceLimit } = Error;
  Error.stackTraceLimit = 0;
  const error = new Error();
  Error.stackTraceLimit = stackTraceLimit;

  // Capture the stack trace above function b
  Error.captureStackTrace(error, b); // Neither function c, nor b is included in the stack trace
  throw error;
}

a();
